I saw a post on Twitter about suggestions if you are suffering from a reading slump. It made me think for a moment about ideas. I don’t often suffer from this. I guess what I do sometimes feel is that I read too many ebooks and not enough physical books.
But these are the suggestions that I came up with.
- Start a new book
I find this also works particularly well if it is a book by an author that you haven’t read before.
Here I would use the example of the book that I picked up last night. I had just finished a book (ebook) that is being published today. The book I started immediately was a library book.
I borrowed this book as I had recently listened to the author, Kathy Lette being interviewed on my favourite podcast. It’s one that was published a few years ago. But I am embarrassed to say that I have never read a Kathy Lette book before. As she’s got a great first name and is also Australian/ British I wanted to rectify this.

- Read a magazine instead of a book
For this I would say ideally a physical copy. Although I will admit to logging into the library app and downloading a few back copies of the Australian Women’s Weekly last weekend.
January’s issue with Princess Mary on the front was a definite drawcard.
But my most recent print copy that I delved into was an old Red magazine.

- Give an audiobook a go.
I rediscovered audiobooks during lockdown. I first visited the idea of audiobooks when my second child was born as a way to entertain my first. We listened to the first book in the Harry Potter series, narrated by Stephen Fry.
Earlier today I finished an audio version of Mhairi McFarlane’s book: Don’t You Forget About Me. I absolutely loved this.

As a result of watching an old episode of Graham Norton the other evening where Stephen Fry was one of the guests, I’ve put in a reservation for one of his books (which will become available in July).
I’m pleased to say that I am not in a reading slump at the moment. I seem to be on a reading roll and hope not to jinx it. Today’s book marks my 40th book read.
Do you have any ideas of how to get out of a reading slump?
